Hey everyone!
If you’re looking for a place that feels like stepping into a postcard—where mist dances over rolling green hills, the air is crisp enough to wake up your soul, and time slows down to let you breathe—then Vattavada is calling your name. This hidden gem near Munnar in Kerala completely stole my heart during my recent trip, and I’m still replaying the memories.
I arrived in Vattavada on a bright morning, the kind where the sky is a perfect blue dotted with fluffy clouds. The drive up from Munnar was magical—winding roads lined with tea estates giving way to step-cut farmlands bursting with fresh veggies. As soon as I reached the welcome sign (“VATTAVADA WELCOME” in that charming bilingual style), I knew I was in for something special.
Standing there amid the endless shades of green, with purple jacaranda trees popping against the tea bushes and distant peaks, I felt tiny yet incredibly alive. The cool breeze carried the earthy scent of soil and fresh produce, and the only sounds were birds and the occasional distant cowbell. No crowds, no chaos—just pure, serene beauty.
Vattavada is often called Kerala’s “Vegetable Bowl” or “Strawberry Village,” and for good reason. The cool climate (perfectly chilly, especially compared to the plains) lets locals grow carrots, cabbage, cauliflower, oranges, and—my favorite—juicy strawberries! I wandered through the farms, chatting with friendly farmers who offered me fresh strawberries straight from the plant. They were sweet, tart, and nothing like what you get in stores. I probably ate way too many!
The landscape is a photographer’s dream. Every turn reveals something new: misty valleys, shola forests in the distance, and those classic rolling tea-green hills that Kerala is famous for. I spent hours just walking along the paths, soaking it all in. One highlight was catching the clouds roll in and out— one minute bright sunshine, the next a soft blanket of fog that made everything look ethereal.
I also explored nearby spots that added even more magic to the trip:
- Pampadum Shola National Park — A short trek into this pristine shola forest felt like entering another world. The biodiversity, the quiet trails, the fresh air—it was rejuvenating.
- Views toward Top Station and the border with Tamil Nadu — The panoramic vistas from higher points were breathtaking, especially with the Western Ghats stretching endlessly.
- Waterfalls like Kuthumkal or Lakkam — Nothing beats sitting by a cascading stream with the hills as your backdrop.
What made it truly special was the peace. Vattavada feels off the beaten path compared to busier Munnar spots. I stayed in a cozy homestay, enjoyed simple home-cooked Kerala meals (appam with vegetable stew, anyone?), and even joined a casual jeep ride through the farms and viewpoints. The locals were incredibly warm—always ready with a smile and a story.
If you’re planning a trip, go during the cooler months (October–March) for that perfect misty vibe, or March–May if you love strawberry season. Pack layers—the evenings get chilly!—and comfortable shoes for wandering.
Vattavada reminded me why I love traveling: to find places that quiet the mind and fill the heart. If you ever get the chance, don’t skip this little paradise in the hills. It’s not just a destination; it’s a feeling.
Have you been to Vattavada or somewhere similar? Drop your experiences in the comments—I’d love to hear!
Until next adventure,
